Dashing boy?

One of my favourite scenes in the whole movie is the scene in which Byrne comes up with "Dashing Boy" as the name of the 'pretend' horse he has running in the plate. I just love watching Byrne and Strang in this scene. Byrne is so funny, as if he doesn't realise how stupid he sounds and Strang's reaction to the name Dashing Boy. I imagine that Strang is thinking- "Seriously, couldn't you think of anything better than Dashing Boy" :)

Anyway, just in case you don't own the film or haven't seen it in a while. Here is my, rather poorly scripted, version.

Anne:

"Do you have a horse running today, Mr Byrne?"

Byrne:

"Yes I have indeed, a fine gelding! Perhaps you would like to see him" (turns to Strang) "Strang! Why don't you show Miss Anne Dashing Boy" (smiling he turns back to Anne) 

Strang:
              
             (turns to Byrne and in somewhat of a quizzical tone) "Dashing Boy" (?)

Byrne:

"Yes, right! Dashing Boy" (nods head and smiles)

Strang:

"Right" (in a slightly sarcastic voice) "Dashing Boy?" (smiles and turns to Anne) "Miss"

What's in a name: Garrett Byrne

After finding that Catharine’s names was indeed spelt the Irish way with an ‘a’ rather than the more common ‘e’, I thought it might be fun to look at the other characters names one-by-one. The first character I will focus on is Garrett Byrne.

The name Garrett originated in Ireland and means ‘brave spearman’. I like to think that the writer of the script chose this name in particular to describe the character. Names and their meanings can often tell a lot about a person, and I believe this is certainly the case here. Garrett Byrne was a courageous, outgoing, handsome, charismatic and a born leader and a lot of this is reflected in what we perceive an ideal ‘brave spearman’ to be.

The last name Byrne is also Irish and is a variant of O’Broin meaning descendants of Branach or Bran and meaning ‘raven’. The family/clan originally came from Kildare and claim descent from Bran, the King of Leinster. It is a common surname in Wicklow, Dublin and Louth.

Here I have included the Byrne coat of arms. It has the blazon of a red shield, with a chevron between three silver dexter hands, the Crest being a mermaid complete with comb and mirror.

Another interesting fact is the Byrne motto is “Certavi et Vici” meaning “I have fought and conquered”. I think this is a perfect motto for Byrne’s character...don’t you?

Character overview:

Byrne is a younger son and will therefore inherit nothing, his wealthy older brother supplies him with a small allowance but wishes him to earn a living in the church. Byrne is determined to catch a wealthy wife to save him from a life of priesthood.
Byrne's conquest is the beautiful Miss Catherine Kennedy who stands to inherit, along with her sister Anne, the bulk of her fathers estate.
When his abduction goes wrong and finds himself on the run along with Catherine, he begins to fall in love with her, despite her not wanting anything to do with him.
